Live Brief - Secret 7

Secret 7 //

The aim of this live brief is to design a new record sleeve for any of the following records:
Chvrches - Clearest Blue
Etta James - At Last
Jack Garrett - Worry
The Jam - Art School
John Lennon - Imagine
Max Richter - Dream 3
Tame Impala - The Less I Know the Better
The end result cannot give any clues away as to which record is within. The artwork must be influenced by the song and lyrics but leave the viewer in the unknown as to which song it is.
Well known album artwork designers are listed below..

Peter Saville

Peter Saville has a very recognisable way of working. His albums pictured above take on a very retro style using primary and complimentary colours. I like the repetition used in the album cover for the Orchestral Manoeuvres as it is eye catching and can sometimes create illusions or play tricks with the viewers eyes. I aim to come up with a few designs for my chosen record using similar patterns.
Jamie Reed

Jamie Reed has used collage for a number of his very well known album artwork. He often uses dated photographs with a mix of different type pasted on top. The use of a number of different typefaces works well together and makes for a very recognisable style of work. His work has been highly praised and is well known all over the world.
Annie Leibovitz
Storm Thorgerson

Storm Thorgerson has produced a number of successful album artworks. On the left is Black Sabath's record technical Ecstacy (1976)
Storm says: 'Here is a design taken unequivocally from the title. I don't think I heard the music, I'm sorry to confess, but the title was so evocative and promising that it wasn't necessary.'
On the right is one of his most successful for Pink Floyd. It is very minimalistic but communicates key aspects of the album.

Graphic Design from the 1960's

One approach I will consider when designing my own album artwork is the style of graphic design around the time the record was released. None of the existing artwork for the record resemble examples of design in the 1960's.

Research into design  around that time shows that they were very big on using bold, primary colours. As well as this, they used very traditional methods of creating design as computers were not around. From this, I will consider the method I will be using in the process of design. I will experiment with screen print or monoprint.
