Work Experience - Kino Design

Kino Design

Farringdon, London

Over the summer break I managed to get myself a few weeks work experience at a graphic design firm in London. Over the 3 weeks I got my first proper insight into the industry.

I spent my time there on a number of different projects including brainstorming fresh ideas for attracting new business. As well as this I worked on the annual booklets they produce for one of their biggest clients; AIC investment company. This comprised of searching sites like shutter stock for relevant, high quality images of the chosen theme (in this case it was UK garden birds). Once I had found suitable images, I would then compile them into mood boards which I then presented to the office and get their feedback.

Probably their largest client is Aberdeen Asset Management.

Kino design are responsible for AAM's huge advertisement campaign seen all over the world including times square and global sporting events.

One of the most exciting aspects of the campaign is the opportunity they had to produce an animation to go along side their work which can be viewed on youtube.

Before this, Kino hadn't had the opportunity to do anything as fun as this and has now turned out to be their favourite and most successful work being viewed all over the world.

Posterzine

As part of my research and development into the new business project, I came up with the idea to design a posterzine.

The message of the posterzine was that 'At Kino we believe it pays to THINK BIG'

After a few test runs, I managed to produce it digitally...

I chose to use an image of their billboard in Times Square NY as the poster image as it demonstrates their ability to think big. The company colour is orange and so I used it as a theme for the magazine side.

The posterzine format came from the slogan THINKING BIG. The way it opens up means that it grows in size with every unfold, thus getting bigger.

In all I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Kino and learnt a huge amount about the industry as well as how an office of that size operates. If I were to go back next year I'd like further insight into the other job roles available in a design studio such as the art worker. I feel as thought I was there long enough to see projects progress and grow and I can't wait to see the finished product when it is finalised.

I also managed to get a mention on their website as I brought in freshly baked muffins on my last day which went down a treat and earned myself the opportunity to return their next summer.
